Premier League outscores LaLiga in global influence rankings

-Most powerful domestic football leagues revealed by POWA Index-

DataPOWA Ltd has today released a list of the ten most powerful domestic football leagues as ranked by POWA index, the data-driven, real-time sports sponsorship valuation engine.

2nd placed LaLiga (Spain) benefit from the global exposure afforded by Real Madrid and Barcelona, the two most influential clubs in the world, however 1st placed Premier League (England) has at least six teams with huge global appeal in Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur.

Six of the featured leagues are from Europe; with Italy’s Serie A, Germany’s Bundesliga and France’s Ligue 1 joined by Turkey’s Super Lig, who are harnessing the power of their super clubs, Besiktas, Fenerbahce and Galatasaray.

DataPOWA C.E.O. Michael Flynn said: “The global influence of the Premier League, now in its 28th season, is a major factor in the commercial strength of so many of its member clubs, and goes some way in explaining why and how a team like Bayern Munich has a lower global influence than Chelsea and Manchester City, who are not even in the top three teams in their own domestic league with Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal above them in POWA index rankings.”

The top leagues provide huge visibility for their lead sponsors; Premier League – EA Sports, Barclays, Budweiser, Cadbury, Coca-Cola and Nike and Tag Heuer, LaLiga – Santander, and Serie A – TIM.

Eight of the top ten are the most powerful leagues from their country of origin, the exceptions being MLS, which is 5th in the list of USA ‘team sport’ leagues (after NBA, NFL, MLB & NHL) and Japan’s J1 League (2nd to Nippon Professional Baseball).

J1 League is the only Asian representative, makes up last place in the top 10, however is still more powerful globally than many other famous footballing leagues such as Netherlands’ Eredivisie, Argentina’s Superliga and Portugal’s Primeira Liga.

About DataPOWA Ltd

DataPOWA is a business offering specialist marketing and data services to sports rights holders, brands and agencies. In November 2018 it launched AI software POWA index, a measurement of power, AI valuation, prediction and ranking system.

About POWA index

POWA index has data from over 3,000 teams, leagues and events from around the globe. POWA index is a data-driven, real-time sports sponsorship valuation engine, providing a transparent view of the market by incorporating traditional media, social, digital and fan platforms.

  • Rights-holders can benchmark against competitors and identify how to maximise their income from sponsorship properties.
  • Brands/sponsors are able to negotiate better sponsorship deals.
  • Agencies can understand which properties afford the most value for their clients, saving considerable time and existing resource costs.
  • Media can track all events/leagues/teams covered and identify trends in sports.

POWA index is continuously analysing over 2.4 trillion data points a day, across 60 unique data sets covering social media (e.g. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok & YouTube), search engines (e.g. Google, Bing, Yahoo!, Baidu & Yandex), results, attendance & player data, media & news coverage, official website, OTT & apps, and fan/follower geographic & demographic data. These inputs create a POWA index score composition. In addition, they act as our signals for the sponsorship property valuation, allowing our clients an unbiased understanding of the potential value of any sponsorship.
